Diversity and Inclusion in the Board Room

In boardrooms and C-suites all over the world Diversity and inclusion are rapidly changing from buzzwords and promises to realities.

These meetings may focus on the business, but it is important to remember that the decisions made at these meetings affect everyone from the employees to the shareholders to the economy. These meetings are extremely structured and adhere to certain guidelines and rules (such as Robert’s Rules of Order).

Boardrooms are typically designed to accommodate a small number of people, generally accommodating between 8 and 20 people around a central table that facilitates face-toface discussions and promotes the feeling of a sense of community. High-quality furniture, as well in technology, such as technology for teleconferencing and advanced audiovisual systems, can help create the atmosphere necessary for productive collaboration.

Discussion boards are an effective way to involve students in discussions that extend beyond the classroom and help students understand how other perspectives are connected to the learning experience in the classroom. To encourage participation from students instructors can begin with icebreakers and questions that allow students to become familiar with their peers’ responses. For example, Speer at Wichita State asks her students to introduce themselves using an emoji chain that describe their personality and the things they enjoy. Students look over the responses of their peers and then reply. Summarizing a discussion by highlighting the most important ideas and themes encourages students to follow the entire forum.
